adventures of a belly dancing acupuncturist

This started as a travelogue to Turkey in the fall '05 so that I wouldn't have to send multiple emails and postcards. I'm still adding anecdotes as I remember them, but it's morphing into a "rant to the ether" spot. Stay, or go. This is my bit of space to do with what I wish.

from art walk to the political beat

Helping friends at their openings until 11 pm is fine, unless you have to be out the door fresh and ready to delve into the nuts and bolts of the political process at 8am. Needless to say, my dithering of what amongst 3 great options I wanted to go out and do later that night was for naught, as I was too wrecked to do anything (even read) and channel surfed in exhausted boredom.

My personal highlights of the Denver County Assembly . . . hm. Not as exciting as last time, but without the presidential primary (and our strong pro Kucinich group) and a senatorial primary, it was more like going through the motions. Unlike some, I was happy to hear the heckling of Hick and Salazar, and I applauded the man who, in response to Salazar's statement that Colorado finally has a democrat in the US senate after 12 years, yelled No We Don't. Ken Gordon should be a national figure once he becomes Secretary of State, an example of how the office should be run. I very much liked the CU Regent at large candidate, Ludwig I believe, who came late as he was barnstorming the state that day. Many others have the detailed recaps that laziness prevents me from providing.

And I liked the bit of snark that came up in the HD5 meeting at the end. We range from yuppies and the like in Lodo, to well raised living to a lower income standard then their parents (ie, me) and younger fresh faced college kids in the variety of capitol hill rentals to some true working class folks in the SW edge of the district just south of Auraria. I like that we had the 4 folks who wanted to be selected to the platform committee have a quickie debate (we got to elect 1). I like that we have a handful of folks who aren't doing the computer/email thing. We have range and variety, and we may be the most diverse and representative microcosm of the democratic party. And if we get the '08 convention, the bulk of it and its events are going to be in our own HD5, so we better get our shit together and serve as an example of diversity coming together to work as the big tent that we are supposed to be.

One of the options while channel surfing last night was The Beach. I caught the scene where the leader gives this grand passionate tribute the the place they've called home for 6 years. Quite the politico, with all of the tyrannical charisma needed to have her own little queendom. Frighteningly enough, it felt appropriate to watch after my morning activities.

And I won a ticket to the ACLU forum with Gary Hart on Tuesday over at Soap Blox Colorado. Is that the hint that I am delinquent in registering over there? Too bad I'm working til 7:30 or so that night to allow myself to get to a Seder on time the next night. I hope Aaron can find another appreciative recipient.

Please pause and send a blessing to the Hook family. My great aunt Flora died on Thursday afternoon. She put up with my uncle and his 4 terms on the city council. She was a straight talker, never minced words.

Rest in peace Auntie Faigie.
